Our bodies need sleep to function properly. Sure, when we’re young it doesn’t seem that important, but as we grow older it becomes more apparent what lack of sleep does to your body and mind.
I’m coming to realize a lot of people have sleep problems of varying degrees. I recently had a chat with some coworkers and most had sleep problems that had occurred for years. I’ve also been dealing with sleep problems for a few years now and haven’t done much about it until recently. It’s amazing how long we’ll ignore a problem because we don’t know that it can be fixed or that it’s even really a problem.
Today I met with a sleep specialist following my sleep study last week. It turns out I stop breathing or struggle to breathe primarily during REM sleep. That might explain why my dreams are so difficult to remember at times. The nice thing is that I don’t need to get a breathing mask, but I need to go see an ENT to see if I need some sort of appliance to help my body maintain airflow. I think it’s funny though, that something as simple as sleep can be so tricky to figure out.
I’m on my road to ‘recovery’, so to speak, and I look forward to getting better sleep in the future. My hope, in sharing this, is that it might trigger a lightbulb in others who may have struggled with a sleep problem or snoring for years and just ignored it. If you have the ability, through insurance or paying cash, look into a sleep clinic. They don’t often prescribe medication from what I can see. Actually I was told to not take any as it further relaxes the airway. But they do look for physical causes to your problem and help you relieve that issue. By the way, ask if they do payment plans or discounts for people without insurance, ours does and it’s very worth it.
Good luck!June 19, 2008 at 10:09 am #148673inariParticipant
I’m glad to hear that you’ve gotten some answers out of the sleep study, and hope you sleep better soon. Then we can get more work out of you *evil grin*.June 19, 2008 at 1:39 pm #148675JaxKeymaster
lol darn! I’m especially looking forward to getting some uninterrupted REM sleep and remembering my dreams for once! Also getting better sleep. That’s crucial.June 19, 2008 at 2:42 pm #148678IcarusParticipant
I’m glad you got some answers to your sleep questions. There’s so much about sleep that we do not understand, and we probably understand so much less on an individual basis. So, I’m very happy to hear that you’re heading in the right direction.June 19, 2008 at 7:09 pm #148681JaxKeymaster
It’s funny how much even the sleep doctors don’t know though. He’s like, why did you wake up after an hour? I always wake up after an hour, I have no idea why. Everyone wants to think it’s me worrying about Carrie having seizures, but I really don’t think it is. She has seizures at other times and usually in the other room. So I don’t think it’s worry at all, but that’s what everything thinks it must be. Who knows. But taking care of the stuff that can be fixed with technology is always helpful.June 20, 2008 at 4:02 am #148684Silver TalonParticipant
I have Sleep Apnea; though I’ve never been tested for it. People have watched me sleep (Because I’d be so tired that I’d fall asleep in the middle of a conversation at times) and know that I stop breathing when I sleep.
Like you, I always wake up about an hour after going to sleep. I don’t know why. At one point in time I was waking up about every hour and a half because that is when I hit REM Sleep and my soft palate would relax and cut off the air supply. After losing some weight it got much better, but I still feel lethargic and certainly am not mentally as sharp as I used to be because of it.
Hopefully I can get tested soon. Need to get signed up for the local Veteran’s Hospital.June 20, 2008 at 1:28 pm #148685JaxKeymaster
The sooner you can, the better. If you just need a cpap machine, they can get you some relief pretty fast. I wish they would just do that so I could get sleep sooner, but oh well. Good luck!
