I would like to lead a self-paced discussion group (that will eventually evolve into Jedi Philosophy 201 beginning at the Adept Training Level).
Here’s what I’d like to do. It will follow both Bertrand Russell’s The History of Western Philosophy and Stephen West’s Philosophize This! (free iTunes podcast). The 201 course will span 200ish selected pages of Russell’s book, and it will cover 9 episodes of West’s podcast (from the pre-socratics, to the socratics, to selected Eastern philosophies).
The discussion group will follow West’s podcast and I will assign readings from Russell’s book based on West’s subject matter.
This discussion group will begin JUNE 1st.
Wests’ podcast can be found here: http://www.philosophizethis.org/
His show is entertaining. His early episodes (the first nine or so…) are VERY rough. But, they get significantly better as you get hooked to his excellent story-telling. It, of course, leaves out many details. but, it will be a fabulous intro to almost any subject.
We will cross-reference West’s claims with Russell’s text (which is touted to be one of the very best intro to philosophy books around).
Russell’s book should be purchased by the curious Jedi. However, because this is for educational purposes, I don’t mind providing a link to the book online: http://www.ntslibrary.com/PDF%20Books/History%20of%20Western%20Philosophy.pdf
If you want to get a head start, please read: pg. 3-81 in Russell’s book (up through Part II) and listen to episodes 1 and 2 of West’s podcast. Focus especially on: Thales, Heraclitus, Democritus, Pythagoras, Parmenides, and Empedocles.
This will be “due” for discussion on June 15th. (two weeks per assignment).
If you don’t have time to read 80 pages of a good social history book in 15 days, I suggest trying to read just a little each day. 15 days times 5 pages is almost 80 pages. If you read 5 pages a day, and then rushed at the end, you could make it.
If you really don’t have time, skip the parts of the authors I didn’t mention. That’s really only 46 pages… reading 3 pages a day will cover all that.
And, if you don’t want to devote any prep work to the discussion group, bring your previous knowledge of philosophy and at least try to listen to West’s podcast. An hour and a half of listening should not be too much to ask.
Here’s how it will work: I will come up with a short list of questions we can discuss. We will discuss and come up with main points on how this philosopher influences Jedi thought (if at all). Then, I will synthesize that information into lectures and eventually it will become the Jedi Philosophy 201 course. There will be 16 weeks of class. 2 weeks to read/listen, and 1 week of discussion OVERLAPPING with the next reading assignment. So, 8 modules, three weeks each, overlapping on the 3rd week of each. Feel free to jump in as you like.
of course, this discussion group is SELF-paced. You can join in and restart a discussion anytime.

How can someone get a hand on the iTunes when not having and not willing to install iTunes?
In general I would be interested in but as written above, I’m not willing to install iTunes just for listening to the tunes, sorry.May 28, 2015 at 1:59 pm #186213RiddleNoxModerator
If you keep “scrolling” you can get to the first episode. it “should” just play in your web browser. Try that.June 2, 2015 at 3:27 am #186232YoshioModerator
Cheers for this! I even could get them downloaded so I can listen to them at any time now.June 2, 2015 at 5:34 am #186236RiddleNoxModerator
Fantastic. I’m happy I could help find you that.
Just as a side note: if you enjoy the podcast (and I do think it is very good), then you can help support him on his home page. It’s http://www.philosophizethis.org/contribute/
You can donate. but, if you use services like AUDIBLE or AMAZON, you can click through a banner on that page and whatever NORMAL purchase you make, a portion of that will get back to him. It’s so easy, and it supports some amazing content. I’ve done it with everything I’ve bought from Amazon since I started listening to his podcast. Easy.June 3, 2015 at 8:12 am #186245YoshioModerator
Thanks for the information. If I remember correctly we have or had a similar thing for/with the IJRS and Amazon as well!? Unfortunately Jax and I never could make clear if it works for those who are following the Amazon link but then change to another Amazon store, in my case the German Amazon side!? Anyway, I will give it a look and listen to the podcasts.June 4, 2015 at 3:21 pm #186299BaruParticipant
I am interested.June 4, 2015 at 3:43 pm #186301RiddleNoxModerator
Great! Let me know when you have made your way through the first reading of HWP and the first couple of podcasts.
I guess I’ll push the deadline back since we’re slow to start up. No big deal.June 4, 2015 at 4:15 pm #186306BaruParticipant
quick question: where do I post my thoughts? In the main discussion group or in my own thread?June 4, 2015 at 5:30 pm #186309RiddleNoxModerator
This would be the place in that thread above. it’s in the Study Groups forum, same as this thread.
