Could you smell them? We taste as we smell, so simply the smell allows you to taste them. There is also the memory of their taste which, especially in the case of food with a strong flavor, would be very similar to actually tasting. I don’t know that this is anything particularly energetic, but it’s hard to tell from your description.
I personally think it’s just the memory of them. It’s not an uncommon occurrence, and these chips would have as strong flavor that really makes a mark. I have the same thing happen when I think of pickles for instance.
