Ego’s tricks
“One of the great dangers of transformational work is that the ego attempts to sidestep deep psychological work by leaping into the transcendent too soon. This is because the ego always fancies itself much more ‘advanced’ than it actually is.”
— Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson
The Tibetan teacher, Chogyam Trungpa, warned of the trap of spiritual materialism. He says we must be ever diligent to spot the ego’s use of the spiritual journey to further its own ends.
We may think it’s spiritual to yearn for divine connection. And yet, if the longing is to fill an emptiness inside, just how does this differ from the one who yearns for money or possessions to fill the inner void? Do we look to our spiritual practices as proof of our evolved consciousness or as protection against fears?
Any time we use spiritual disciplines to maintain our identity and security, we are not yet on the path of genuine spiritual development.
“Enlightenment is ego’s ultimate disappointment.”
— Chögyam Trungpa

KeymasterI think many people fall into this trap. I have probably done it myself more than I realize. That’s the first step, to realize that you are doing these things. Since it’s always easier to see in others, I often see it when I look around within the Jedi community and see those who claim to be one thing, yet their actions show a lack of true spiritual development. This also reminds me to keep my own training in check and to keep working on these things.
I hope that everyone would take a look at their own life and really see what their spirituality does for them. Do you see some of these issues applying to you? If so, that’s ok. We’re all learning here. Seeing is what allows us to then decide to make some changes. If you’re unsure how to begin, you can ask here or drop me a private email/message. I’m currently working on these things and have linked to my primary teacher on the boards here, but I am willing to share my own perspective as someone currently working on things at a much deeper level than before.
Hey, maybe I’ll be like yoda soon hahaha :yoda

Yes…I think I am leaping back into the transcendent however…to balance myself more.
As a pragmatic sort of person I do well “in the world” and the spritual seems very personal and mysterious so I simply accept what seems to be there. It’s okay, and has worked fairly well for me as a Christian.
But I think I lately delved into site politics to escape my fear of the unknown… For me that is anything mystical or even “transcendent” in terms of not being able to qualify or quantify what is happening.
I grabbed onto what I knew rather than this…and I really was Force Spanked… It is time for me to let go of my “little girl” ideas of spirituality and have the courage to explore. For me it is a terrible leap to go from “belief and faith” to “transcendent interraction”!
So…I bought the book on “Astra Projection” and if the class goes ahead will try to participate. I also began to take a course on Reiki healing…
Very scary stuff for me…my ego is not too comfortable.

KeymasterIt’s ok, we will go very slowly, because I’ve also been working through all these fears myself. The book is paced slowly so that you have a better chance of being able to succeed. So no worries, we will do this, and we will create a safe space for everyone to learn.
I agree that it takes a lot of courage however, to face the unknown. If I get some time I can post an exercise that my new teacher gave to me to do. It can help you with the fear.
