Technique is very important however, and I would be willing to bet you’re technique is nowhere near what it would be with formal training.  Also, since you’ve had some training, it’s easier for you to be aware of your technique now. 

So, we certainly can’t say “Don’t try to teach yourself anything.”  If you have no other option, it’s better than nothing probably.  But, I would also stress that what you know by teaching yourself is not going to be the same thing as taking actual classes, or working with someone else who knows what they’re doing.
