I've read a couple of 2015-ish books outlining the research. While most tend to poo poo all this and call it fluff or pseudoscience (as noted in your linked page), it is hard to imagine the US government having people researching/doing it as black ops programs for over 30 years and handing out several tens of millions to keep doing it.

imo - those who poo poo it have never seriously studied / done it.
And even many in the government who know it works try to brush it off -- because they are afraid that people might find out how easy it really is. And, being easy, it allows folks to explore beyond the 'every day'... which means those 'in power' no longer have that strong a hold over 'the explorers'. *shrugs* just my opinion...
