Feeling the Force

We have now spent quite a bit of time talking about what the Force is, what it represents to others, and its various aspects. You understand the difference between the Living Force and Unifying Force, and how there really is no such thing as the Light Side or Dark Side of the Force.

Today I would like to present to you the very first Force exercise I ever learned. It is a very simple exercise, but it will allow you to build a deeper connection over time. First I must give you a few cautions. Don’t do this exercise immediately after eating. Wait at least three hours after eating a full meal or one hour after a light snack; the process of digestion can interrupt your energy flow. Also relax and don’t hurry. Just let everything happen. You can’t force the experience.

Find a quiet place where you can sit undisturbed for a few minutes. You want to sit in a straight-backed chair, ankles crossed, to help your posture. Close your eyes and breathe through your nose. Breath in deeply so your lower abdomen expands outwards (you should be able to feel this if you place your hands lightly on your abdomen). Also, don’t slow your breathing; your breath should come at its regular, natural rhythm. Concentrate on your breathing for a few moments until you are fully relaxed.

Rub your palms vigorously for a few seconds (about 5 seconds you don’t need to rub your palms raw). Take your hands apart to shoulder width, and then slowly bring your palms toward each other again. When you feel a kind of resistance, stop. The resistance should feel kind of spongy, like you are trying to push two like poles of a magnet together or someone has put a rubber band around your hands. Try to roll this feeling around in your hands as if you were playing with a sponge ball. If you lose the feeling, don’t worry about it. Just rub your hands together again. Continue doing this for approximately 5-10 minutes.
