Jax created the topic: Gravity waves found!

There will be many many articles on this, but I'm sharing this one because the website is pretty. discovermagazine.com/bonus/gravity

I've read a couple of articles, but it's at the end of the day and the end of my work week... and I'm just not comprehending why this is such an enormous deal.

I know it is! It must be amazing to be able to SEEEEEEEEE gravity. But, what are the practical implications for this? What can we create (as a society) with this data?

First off, any insight into basic science always has far more implications than we can imagine at the time of discovery. Second, it's taken us 100 years to see this. These people will be getting a nobel prize assuming it stands up to scrutiny (but the data looks great!). Third, we have a new tool to explore the universe with. It's like discovering a whole new color exists. All the stuff that was that color before that we couldn't see we can now probe. We can 'see' and find black holes that were otherwise impossible to find.

Is that clearer now? :-)

No problem. Those details can get lost in articles. I just happened to read it while eating lunch so it was fresh in mind. :-)

plus, now we can detect better how gravity comes into play, and eventually this might lead to anti gravity. So far every force in the universe has a polar opposite, so if we can find gravity waves, then we can figure out how to negate those.

Great point! This certainly opens up the potential for greater understanding of gravity.
