Rediscover your sense of smell

"Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived."

-- Helen Keller

Many of us are so wrapped up in our thinking and activity that we have lost touch with our senses. Sensing brings us fully into the moment. Only when we are aware and conscious can we receive the gifts of experience our senses continually bring us.

Today, set an intention to be aware of smells. Focus on your nose and awaken to its sensitivity. As you smell more consciously, let go of your judgment of the aromas. Don’t label them good or bad; simply experience them for their individual qualities. Also note when smells revive old memories.

"When you start using senses you’ve neglected, your reward is to see the world with completely fresh eyes."

-- Barbara Sher

Most of the time I used this, I have smelt things I don't want to ever smell again. I have noticed smells I wouldn't have otherwise. For Example, on one of my meditation trips to the park early in the morning, I have noticed the smell of the water and the dew on the grass. I never would have noticed it before. Thanks for posting this, I will use this more often.

I like to do this when I'm outside, but not so much inside.  usually the smells inside aren't so pleasant.  :-)  But I love the smell of a cold morning, or a spring day when the lilacs are in bloom.  Or the smell of the forest.

Maybe we don't pay attention to smells as much because cities usually don't smell so good!  But thankfully Austin has many green spaces, so I do pay attention to them when I'm in those areas.
