Jax created the topic: GP: Jedi Skills/Attributes: Physical

(The instructions for this project are found in a separate thread. Read this first. instituteforjedirealiststudies.org/smf/index.php?topic=1817.0 )

Use this thread to discuss what physical skills and attributes a Jedi could train towards.  If you mention a specific martial art, state why you mention it since there is so much variation within and between styles.   I will occasionally edit this post to add the suggestions added to this thread.

Physical
-   Healthy Body – as appropriate for the individual
-- Fitness regime
-- Healthy diet
- Understanding of health and nutrition from an Eastern and Western perspective
-- Understands the needs of their own body
Knowledge of the body
Knowledge of nutrition
Management of stress
- CPR/First Aid certification

Warriorship
- Understand what a warrior is
-- Understanding how being a warrior applies to everyday life
- Survival Skills
-- Situational Awareness
-- Self Sufficiency
- understanding/defining the differences between warrior, soldier and fighter
- different understandings of the warrior concept/ideal (Medieval Knight, Samurai, Yamabushi, Chinese Nobelmans, Spartans and so on)
- the different rules warriors had to follow (Oath of Chivalry, Bushido ...)
- difference between martial art and martial sport
Martial/combat strategies

For martial arts someone could train in, I would recommend:
- Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu/Ninjutsu as it is a system which includes 9 different Ryu-ha (schools) consisting of Samurai Ryu-ha and Ninja Ryu-ha and so offers a very broad variety of techniques from hand to hand combat up to weapon training
- Tai Chi Chuan, but best with the offer to learn also Tui Shou (pushing hands) and weapon forms
- Aikido to know how to neutralize a situation with minimal physical damage

Here are things that have been discussed in the faculty area.  Some of these aren't detailed enough but I wanted to get them down as a start.

Physical:

Knowledge of the body
Knowledge of nutrition
Participation in some sort of physical activity
Healthy diet
Management of stress

Yes, I agree Eastern versus Western (Alternative/Complementary versus Allopathic)

Not much into that warrior stuff, but agree that survivor skills and knowing what to do in a situation, like a mugging or shooting would be a good idea.

For the Warriorship part:

- different understandings of the warrior concept/ideal (Medieval Knight, Samurai, Yamabushi, Chinese Nobelmans, Spartans and so on)
- the different rules warriors had to follow (Oath of Chivalry, Bushido ...)

What also could be worth to talk about:
- Sun Tzu "The art of war"
- 36 stratagems

What are the 36 stratagems? Do you have a link or book reference for what they are?

Here we go, I have the wiki explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty-Six_Stratagems
And one other link with a kind of association for martial arts: http://www.warrior-scholar.com/articles/36stratagems.htm

Sorry, I don't have any books, as it already has been a while since I last read them and it was a book from the library back in my home/birth place. Maybe my brother knows one.!? I will ask him about as I see him this evening.

The wiki page has enough reference information to give me an idea of what you're referring.  I'll probably keep it a little more general in the list - conflict strategies perhaps? But I'd like to keep the specific recommendations for a future document about strategy for instance. This would be a good research project for someone to take on if it interests them. ;-)

Conflict strategies sounds good for me. And yes I'm interested in this topic and it has been already a while since I had read these books, so it might be time to read through them again!?
But for writing or doing a research project, that might take quiet a while for me, as I do have all the time problems with time as I do have to much interest in to many things. ;D But, if time is not a problem, I would like to see what I can come up with.  :meditate

Basic philosophy of physical exercising. How to get over the "too hard to get started."

Overview of physical training methods and their benefits. Encourage jedi to find their own style of training.
