Leadership- I've noticed a lot of quotes on leadership which teach good moral values in them, and some strategy. But anyway, Leadership is something that is helpful not so much to ourselves but through that, one does become a person of value because their focus isn't so much on creating more Followers, but rather more Leaders. And the role of Leader can branch of in to countless other roles, such as educator, mediator, organizer, strategist, philosopher, and believe it or not - follower.

Criminology- I studied a little bit of Criminology in college. I learned a lot from that. And also how it relates to every other subject out there.

First Aid- For obvious reasons.

Cryptology- This one is more of a bonus objective I'll throw out there, because it's fun and could potentially be very useful for some.

Can you explain why criminology was helpful to you as a Jedi?

Sure! I'm glad you asked.

To me, the Jedi ideals that have most deeply resonated within me are that which focus on the being Guardians of Peace and Justice. Protecting all life. A Jedi also seeks to improve themselves through knowledge and training. That knowledge also helps make me better understand the problems in the world, and ways to fix them. Criminology doesn't just focus on Crime, but interestingly enough it is linked with just about any and every other subject out there that you could think of. Law, Philosophy, Sociology, Strategy, Economics, Psychology, Biology, - you name it and you could likely think of how Criminology relates to just about any and every subject out there.

When I do my patrols, to protect people in dangerous areas, or where ever I'm at at any given moment. I like to be informed, of what is going on - as well as knowing what the most reasonable solutions are for any given situation. Also knowing why people are the way they are, what causes a person to do things a certain way, what causes a society to improve or get worse.

I'll try to think of some specific examples of ways I've found Criminology as a Jedi. Some of this might be common sense but not to everyone. In Criminology I've learned how a person's diet can affect their mood. Even the nicest people, with a poor diet, can be more likely to act in anger. Not constructive to a Jedi's lifestyle. Just serving as a reminder for everyone to maintain a healthy diet, especially Jedi. Not just staying fit although that too, but also getting the proper vitamins and nutrients, vitamins B6, B12, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Protein, etc.

Also through understanding the Integrated Theories in Criminology, see not just how each theory works, but since one of the best ways to prove something - is to disprove it - see how each theory contributes to each other - even and especially the theories which contradict each other. Life course theories versus Latent trait theories.

Knowing others is wisdom. Knowing self is enlightenment. All part of a Jedi's training. Criminology was very useful in being one of the most definitive ways of understanding how the world works and how and why people are the way they are, although mainly from just statistics and data rather than just individual personal experiences, although some of them are mentioned in the studies and analyzed as well.

Just found this thread so thought I'd add some areas that I've thought would be helpful to each individual Jedi and as a community.

- Aquaponics (see why here... instituteforjedirealiststudies.org/forum/64-the-green-jedi/30780-aquaponics#42317 )
- Self-defense (martial arts although I leave the specifics to those who are more versed in this field than I)
- Language (Learning multiple languages, even just one, can be beneficial and help with communication since we have Jedi in different countries)
- Finance (debt free living, investing, loans, insurance...)
- First-Aid/Medical Training/Naturopathic Medicine
- Fitness (injury prevention and recovery, fitness in relation to weight loss, correction of muscle imbalances, core/balance/flexibility/reactive/resistance/SAQ training, body building, corrective exercise, senior fitness, women's fitness, youth exercise, neuromuscular stretching, cardio training, sports performance, MMA conditioning, manual muscle testing, positional isometrics, goniometric assessments, corrective exercise for basketball, golf fitness...the list goes on)

Things that have already been listed and that I agree with....criminology, engineering, architecture/computers/technology and other things that can help in day to day operations.

A few things here..
i think its important for all people especially jedi to have working knowledge of what might be best catagorized as
SELF SUFFICIENCY SKILLS

How embarrasing would it be to hear something like this:
"You know ten languages, can read minds and astral project you can survive anywhere from antartica to the mojave, you can kill a man with your thumb, and hold a lively conversation with the dalai lama or the pope-
but we're waiting for triple A at 2 AM in a bad neighborhood because you cant change a tire/replace an air filter

From really simple things like changing tires or mending cloths to slightly more involved subjects like organicly growing ones own vegetables
Carpentry to the extent that one can repair a hole on a boat or build a structure that wont fall on ones head

If the radio isnt working i know that i dont have the technical knowledge to even know if its POSSIBLE to fix it unless theres really obvious damage like melted circuit boards

Beyond the scope of ranks or promotions i feel that as a collective the knowledge and ability to be completely self sufficient in our lives and lifestyles is something we ought to strive for. There are people that not only produce their own electricity but produce a SURPLUS of it which they sell back to the grid

And in a general sense i feel like jedi as a collective whole shoukd be cabable of anything from translating ancient hebrew to building a space ship!

But i tend to dream big. Ill tell you what I intend on doing, im working to be see that the foundations will be set in my lifetime so that in 1000 yrs there will still be a Jedi academy and the jedi will be every bit the powerful and inspiring force for honesty peace justice and freedom throughout the galaxy that we were portrayed as being in the movies

Maybe all of this has been said if so i apologise

Healthy it is, to think on an epic scale :yoda

everyone has value

Much of this is touched on in the main course: Situational Awareness 101.
And we have some plans for more extensive topics which might become 101-2 or 102 and 103, etc.

Re: fixing a busted radio
It reminded me of the old game, Traveller. While it took an engineering specialist of level 9 to rebuild a broken flux coil; it only took a level 3 to remove the broken one and stick in a new one. Same for most radio/electronics -- replacing is much easier than having to troubleshoot printed circuit / chip level issues.

Unless it's the old old crystal radio set -- even the ancient Cub Scout manuals had instructions on how to make one of those... though if I recall, it only picked up AM signals though lately, some have made equivalent, tunable FM receivers.

Hunter, I'd just like to say thank you for this post. I agree that as Jedi we should be as self sufficient as possible and I whole heartedly support your dream for the Jedi Academy and its future.

It never gets easier. You just get better.

If you have some specific things that you are really passionate about to add to the list as well, that would be nice. For instance, financial literacy is critical for all. And having Jedi within a community with electronics knowledge would be very helpful. I agree with your vision, just curious if you have some specifics that haven't been listed prior in this thread.

Personally I'm very passionate about computers. I think that in today's world, proper working knowledge of computer (specifically Internet) safety is very important. So much is done online now and many people even store valuable things on the Internet. Effectively protecting yourself from hackers/viruses is equally as important as protecting yourself from computer failures and I think a Jedi should know how to do these things.

Jedi are protectors and should know how to protect themselves in all situations. Both online and offline.

It never gets easier. You just get better.

I agree. The more computer literate we can be, the better. We don't all need to be able to program, but understanding security is certainly helpful.
