Setanaoko created the topic: The Gallon Challenge

Can you take a full on bath with one gallon of water? Nathan and I just did this and managed to make it less than a gallon (even got all of my hair washed- he beat me barely, and honestly I think it's because of his LACK of hair)?

It was a contest because: WHY NOT?!

I got the idea from basic when we were taught how to do a Sea Shower. The idea behind it is to use as little water as possible because the water on a cutter is limited and everyone on the boat has to use it for a number of reasons (drinking water, cooking, showers, toilets, etc). So my challenge to you- can you do the same?

Do I get to collect gallons for the days I don't shower? :)

Sea showers... spit on a wash rag and lather up. :P

When I am beat up from a day of pulling weeds / fighting the yard.... no way could I do it with only a gallon. Good super hot shower to pound the shoulders and back... takes a gallon just to let my skin know it's wet!

at the south pole we got a 2 minute shower twice a week. So I've done that. I just have no desire to do it now, as I use showers to wake up and warm up my muscles after an uncomfortable night. So, I have to wuss out now.

This is a good idea though, to challenge people to use less water. Especially those who live in areas where water is a concern.

Another idea for those who want to stretch their showers is the infamous baby wipe bath, at least infamous to those who served in the military during at least the more recent era (not sure when it started). When showers aren't an option, baby wipes are awesome! lol I suspect they have quite a few of them on the cutters!

Yes. I call them bird paths.

I can bathe with a hand towel and a sink.

But washing hair like that is harder. Did you do it on your own Setanaoko? Or did your husband help with the hair?

Why not add all our ideas for conserving water for bathing here? :-) Bonus challenge. lol

When I know I won't be able to wash much for a while, like at the Pole, I just shaved my head. Saves a lot of time that way. I know there are fancy shower heads that allow you to turn off the water without it resetting the temperature and stuff, so you can use that when lathering up with soap and stuff.

One way to cut down on water use is to turn off the shower after soaping up, then turn it back on to rinse. A four-minute shower uses approximately 20 to 40 gallons of water.

Better yet... collect rain water for later...

... and run in the rain in a swimsuit!

Or, shower outside so the water also waters the lawn?

Flushing a toilet accounts for 30% of household usage (as long as you don't live with the shower on or filling the tub for a visiting seal otter). By placing a brick in the water bowl of the toilet, we could save up to 10 million liters (2.6 million gallons) of water PER DAY.
