Welcome to 18 glorious minutes of Penn Jillette (magician, comedian, author and passionate Libertarian) laying his view of modern politics on us – with the disclaimer that he doesn’t know what’s best for others, and he doesn’t pretend to.

In my opinion, when someone starts with "I do not know everything..." -- it means they have really taken some time to THINK about things instead of just glib 'shooting from the hip' or can think in more than 140 character snippets.

Definitely worth learning about Libertarianism and 'what makes sense' when looking at this election cycle.
If only we had this video 18 months ago, perhaps we would not be looking at the clown car we have driving toward the finish line right now.

The problem with libertarianism is while people claim freedom they ignore the results of what happens without regulations. It ignores the history of libertarianism which was from rich people who created a system that made people feel like they were choosing freedom but were ultimately just lining the pockets of big business.

There needs to be room for different perspectives and such, I just don't see the libertarians being the alternative, as a general rule. Perhaps I'd feel different if more libertarians actually believed like the Jillettes.

It is a good reason to understand what Libertarianism covers. Since many might think it is 'being Liberal' which is almost a slander when spoken by those inside the political Beltway.

Yes, 'do anything;harm no one' seems pretty chaotic. There needs to be some basic structure and organization to uphold the structure or it would rapidly fall apart. However, the concept of -- less government intervention in how individuals live their lives is not a bad thing to work toward. Nor reducing the size of government -- in the hopes one feeds the 'monster' less in taxes, etc. As PJ notes, a good chunk of our annual taxes do not go toward 'the people' but to large corporations. For example -- there are many programs 'on the books' which originally helped small farmers around the time of the Dust Bowl. Since the 80s, corporate mega farms have been taking that same subsidy; basically 'free money' for NOT planting certain crops so the market is not flooded. Basically forcing the market to artificially 'go high' for pricing and ignoring the idea that 'extra crops' could be shipped to feed those with little or no food instead of destroying it (dumping ship loads into the sea). Several hundred million dollars are 'paid' each year to the petroleum industry 'to keep pumping'. Even during the worst of the oil spills in the early 21st century, every oil producing company made several Billion dollars in profits... why do we needs to pay them several million more in 'free money'?

Two basic examples of money which would be better spent -- improving infrastructure? Food programs to keep school kids fed and healthy so they can learn? Increasing teacher salaries since we basically are using them to not only teach -- but also to raise and nurture our kids since 'parents' are too busy working long hours for less pay? There are many causes -- good ones -- where a few million would make tons of sense instead of giving it to the same 6 mega corporations which have their fingers in nearly every aspect of our lives. Less 'fingering' is a good thing.

Also true -- as you note -- absolute Libertarianism would be a mess. However, looking at the mess we've worked ourselves into right now -- it seems obvious 'the old semi two party system' has not done the best 'long term' job for the people or the country. Perhaps it is time to think outside the 'two party' box?

Yes, it would be nice to really look at what works and what doesn't. I honestly can't imagine it happening anytime soon. So I wonder what is possible? Maybe just chipping away at the biggest unnecessary subsidies and such?
