Zensei created the topic: Zensei's Training Journal

6/18/2014

I went to the track today and ran 2 miles with the intention of dialing in a new GPS heart-rate monitor watch. It didn't go as planned. The running was fine, 2 miles at my current fitness level is no big deal, but the heart-rate monitor was all over the place.

I am planning on training at my max aerobic heart rate, and step one is setting a baseline of minutes per mile pace at my max aerobic heart rate. However, the monitor kept reporting much higher bpm than I think was accurate, even when I slowed down to almost walking.

Why push that hard? Have you researched this and talked to your doctor?

Yes, I have researched this. I trail run very regularly and have built a good base of mileage and fitness this year. In April, I ran a 25k trail race, and in one week I have a 12 hour endurance challenge lined up.

The max aerobic heart rate might sound crazy, but it will probably decrease my normal pace. If anyone is interested in learning about it, check out Dr. Phil Maffetone's The Big Book of Endurance Training.

6 mile trail run

After my run, I found a quiet spot by a pond and tried Yoshio's suggestion of meditation post-exercise. I focused on just quieting my mind and not thinking. It went OK, there were a few brief moments where I succeeded. When thoughts came up I just re-focused on stillness and breathing. I know this is something that will take much practice, but I'm happy with my effort today.

Well done. :-) i have some days where I can't get a moment of peace. Other days it's relatively easy. But I still don't experience a lot of true quiet. There's always something. But I am a lot better about not making the noise significant so I can meditate in spite of it. :-)
