Unceremoniously, just how Lao Tzu would want it:

"If you can talk about it,
it ain't Tao.
If it has a name,
it's just another thing.

Tao doesn't have a name.
Names are for ordinary things.

Stop wanting stuff. It keeps you from seeing what's real.
When you want stuff, all you see are things.

These two statements have the same meaning.
Figure them out, and you've got it made."

There have been over 100+ translations of 'chapter one' and beyond. Many in the late 1800s and into the 1920s or so. Then picked up again in the 1960s with some going back and re-translating the translations from earlier times.

That Which Is Called The Tao Is Not The Tao

The flow of energy . . . . .

Here . . . . .
........It . . . . .
........Is . . . . .

Nameless . . . . .
Timeless . . . . .
Speed of Light . . . . .

Float . . . . . beyond fear . . . . .
Float . . . . . beyond desire . . . . .

Into . . . . . this Mystery of Mysteries
through this Gate . . . . . of All Wonder

from "Adaptation" by Timothy Leary (Psychedelic Prayers, 1966)

heck, makes one wonder if the 'Tao of Pooh' is just as valid a 'translation' to consider as all the variants.

"To know the way,
we go the way,
we do the way.
The way we do,
the things we do,
it's all there in front of you.
But if you try too hard to see it,
you'll only become confused.
I am me and you are you.
As you can see;
but when you do
the things that you can do,
you will find the way.
The way will follow you.”

It isn't? haha I love that book.

I think the less academic one makes it, the less words one uses, the more accurate it is.

And, if you haven't read Te of Piglet, it's SO MUCH BETTER than the first book.
