Written by Khaos. I found this exercise to be eye-opening. It does, in a way, encourage a limited perspective. BUT, when working on the SELF, and only the "self", this can really help you realize who you are.

"While on the path, the adept comes to realize they are the center of the universe. That the world does in fact revolve around them. Oh, there's plenty of science to the contrary, and I have no argument with the science that we aren't, and yet, as Sherlock Holmes said.

“You see,” he explained, “I consider that a man’s brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has difficulty laying his hands upon it. Now the skilful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic. He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order. It is a mistake to think that that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend upon it there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones.”

“But the Solar System!” [Dr. Watson] protested.

“What of the deuce is it to me?” he interrupted impatiently: “you say that we go round the sun. If we went round the moon it would not make a pennyworth of difference to me or to my work.”

This is not an encouragement of wilful ignorance, so much as an acknowledgement of where one places there passion, and how much that effects there lives.

So too, does the adept realize exactly where he stands in regards to his work, at the center of his universe, the world that he creates around him, for he is truly the creator of all he surveys, big, or small.

Now, this may at first seem a bit fantastical, and more than a bit egotistical, and yet, such an attitude instils an understanding that one is responsible, and can change all that he comes into contact with. Instead of perhaps thinking he is simply a worm on a hook, or a puppet on some strings, the adept realizes there importance, there ability to make the world "there" world as they wish it to be.

Such is the understanding of true nature of power. The spheres of influence.

Everyone, from the most mediocre, to the most exceptional individual possesses a sphere of influence, a degree of control over what surrounds them in there environment. From the homeless man on the corner, to the billionaire in his penthouse. What really separates them is degrees of ambition, and above all, awareness.

Awareness changes everything, and the following exercise is one in awareness. It is not a meditation, it is a taking stock of exactly where you are in your life and where you want to be. It is an understanding of where you are in relation to your goals, relationships, and choices you have made in regards to your present station in life. If you are one of those shiftless, ambitionless, wastes, dedicated to mediocre and comfort, this exercise will have nothing to offer you and you need not continue.

Be warned, for those that are truly honest with themselves and are willing to face what true awareness can give them this may be a humbling, and perhaps scary experience in regards to exactly what you have done with your life thus far. It is not an easy thing to realize that it is no-ones fault but your own as to where you stand in your development of your life.

Stand or sit, it does not matter, as again, this is not a meditation, it is a process of taking stock of ones life, of making yourself aware of where you stand in relation to all else.

Start with yourself, you are the center, of which everything else revolves, you are the center of the universe.

Take stock of yourself, start with the first sphere, your physical form, this includes everything from your hair, your nails, your form(are you in the shape you want to be) Become aware of this first field of influence that you have direct control over. Is it what you want it to be, it reflects the choices you have made certainly, but were these choices done with awareness, were they in fact, the choices that led to the realization of what you want your body to represent, to yourself, and others.

The next immediate sphere would be your manner of dress, are your clothes wrinkled? Full of holes? Are they in the style and manner of dress you want? Or have merely accepted? Are they clean? Do they have stains? Etc. Take all this in and then ask yourself, is this what I want to be, do I reflect what I want to be.

Then move out further, to your dwelling( this could be one room, or a whole house) Is it messy? Is it in disrepair? Does it reflect you wants? Your passions? Is it decorated to your liking?

Take a moment, and realize all that you survey reflects the measure of your influence over your surroundings.

Move on further to your yard, is the grass unmowed? Does the outside of your dwelling look dirty? Does anything need to be repaired? Your car, is it washed? Do the tires have the appropriate amount of air? Do the signal lights work properly? Is the car dirty? Is it even the car you want?

Take this exercise even further, into your job, and first and foremost, ask yourself if this is the job you want, and if it isn't, why have you not taken steps to the one you have? If it is, then reflect upon your workspace, and how other employees are in relation to you, how they act as there spheres come into contact with yours. Your Boss, your work habits, etc.

Take it into your social sphere, do your friends reflect the type of people you would like to be interacting with? Be absolutely critical of them, there manner of dress, intelligence, are you embarrassed by them in public, do you make excuses and justification of there behavior of yourself and others?

For many, this is the extent of there influence, Spheres of influence vary greatly, and if you find spheres outside of this, then continue the exercise, see for yourself just how far your influence spreads, or could if you are willing to become the creating force in your life.
Use this exercise to honestly look at the life you have made for yourself, the life you have created, reflected by your choices and actions, or lack thereof.

You see, for many, life becomes a compromise, and an existence of half measures and acceptance. One trades ambition and passion for letting go of what they want and spending more time in denial trying to be happy with what they got whether its what they want or not

It is more often called giving up or quitting, but of course feel good philosophies and religions have made it there business to make giving up laudable, that one is always at the mercy of the universe, or some deity instead of becoming the controlling and creating force in there life. They learn to be content with "the way things are"

The adept knows better, they know that there is only one place to find the power of the creator.
